Xin nian hao (happy new year)! Chinese New Year is a colourful, vibrant and exciting celebration that brings plenty of life to those dreary, grey and cold winter months of January and February (the date changes according to the Chinese lunar calendar). While there are dozens of customs and traditions associated with the holiday, it’s the food that gets most of us excited about it – and our collection of Chinese New Year recipes has everything you need to celebrate the occasion.
Prosperity salad is a common sight at any dinner table during Chinese New Year, with everyone shouting lo hei as they toss it into the air with chopsticks. Dumplings are regarded as lucky, so they often make an appearance too – try your hand at some homemade Har gau or Pork and chive dumplings for a real celebration. Vegetable spring rolls usher in the first signs of the season, while Bak Kwa – a beloved barbecued pork jerky – is given as a gift.
Whatever you decide to cook for Chinese New Year, make sure there’s lots of it – this is a time for generosity, indulgence and pleasure, so keep your platters piled high and treat yourself to one of the best cuisines in the world. Be sure to take a look at the rest of our Chinese recipes for even more inspiration, too.
