Cottage pie and shepherd’s pie are two of the U.K.’s most iconic dishes. They consist of meat and gravy tucked beneath a rich layer of mashed potato, which is often scored so that the crispy edges of the potato resemble a thatched roof. There is debate about whether or not the two are the same dish or different ones; in most modern recipes, shepherd’s pie is made with lamb and cottage pie is made with beef. However, historically both names were used to refer to a dish made with leftover cooked meat that was sliced and then topped with gravy and mashed potato and baked. Whatever you call it, shepherd’s pie is a fantastic and comforting meal – and still an excellent way to use up leftovers.
We have countless variations on the site for spiced shepherd’s pie, curried shepherd’s pie, cottage pies made with ox cheek and more. Take a look at our full collection of cottage and shepherd’s pie recipes below to find out more.
