Keshia Sakarah is a second-generation West Indian born in the UK. Her grandparents immigrated to England in the 1950s during the Windrush era from Montserrat and Barbuda. Growing up in a Caribbean household, Keshia was very connected to her culture and learnt a lot about it watching her grandparents cook. Following a trip back to Montserrat at fourteen years old, she was exposed to more of her heritage and wanted to deepen her understanding and connection to her roots.
Visiting many other Caribbean islands since, such as Trinidad, Tobago and St Lucia to name a few, she realised there was more diversity in West Indian cuisine that was not accessible here in the UK. After completing her BSc Food and Consumer Management at University College Birmingham and MSc Nutrition and Public Health Management at Sheffield Hallam, she started Caribe' - Authentic Caribbean in 2018.
Keshia successfully completed numerous pop-ups and kitchen residencies around London and her most recent project saw her pop-up become a permanent concept: 'Island food! Carnival vibes' arrived at Pop Brixton in October 2019. It's a bright, colourful and relaxed space where customers can enjoy the sounds of soca, reggae and dancehall along with exciting island beer, a 'rum shop' selling a collection of rums from the islands of the Caribbean and a diverse collection of dishes that celebrate Caribbean food culture.
