The 2024 list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants has been announced, after a glittering ceremony in Las Vegas. Discover how UK chefs fared and which restaurants made the cut.
There are plenty of restaurant awards jostling for prime position as our go-to eating out guide, but there are few quite as prestigious or revered among chefs as The World's 50 Best Restaurants list. It details the top fifty dining destinations we should be visiting across the world, based on the expertise of 1,080 restaurant industry experts, who are divided between twenty-seven global regions. At the end of May, the experts had already announced this year's extended list, which covers the rankings from 51 to 100; British restaurants which made the cut were Core by Clare Smyth (97), Lyle's (87), Tomos Parry's Brat (65) and Mountain, a new entry at 94. Isaac McHale's The Clove Club was placed at 80, down from 38 last year.
Last night, however, all eyes were on the top fifty – legendary chefs, restaurateurs and food and drink brands from around the world assembled in Las Vegas for a typically star-studded ceremony, the results of which were also streamed online. It was ultimately Disfrutar in Barcelona, headed up by Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro and Eduard Xatruch, which took the top place, edging up a spot on its second place position in 2023. From a British point of view, Jeremy Chan's Ikoyi was ranked at number 42 (down from 35 in 2023), while Santiago Lastra's modern Mexican restaurant KOL was placed at number 17. KOL was a new addition in 2023, when it entered the list at 23.
A number of individual winners were announced on the night, including Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura of Maido in Lima, who took home the Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award 2024. Other individual winners included Pablo Rivero of Don Julio in Buenos Aires, who won the Beronia World's Best Sommelier Award 2024, and Janaína Torres, who was crowned the World’s Best Female Chef 2024, an ever-controversial award.
