There are many ways to decorate your pie crust to make it look attractive and appealing when it comes out of the oven. Always roll your pastry to a thickness of about 0.5cm to top your pie. Here we give three examples of decoration but you can use your imagination to create others.
Leaves
Use a leaf shaped cutter to cut pieces out of the pastry
Moisten the rim of the pie dish
Begin arranging the leaves around the edges of the pie dish, overlapping slightly
Make another layer on top leaving the first layer visible
Repeat this until your pie is covered
Push down on the edges to seal
Brush with egg wash and bake in a hot oven
Hearts
After rolling out your pastry cut a hole using a heart shaped cutter before placing over your pie
Trim the edges of the pastry with a small knife
Using the leftover pastry cut out heart shapes and arrange around the edges of the pie, facing inwards
Brush with egg wash and bake in a hot oven
Braid
Cover your pie with pastry and seal the edges
Cut long strips of pastry and fasten 3 together at the top
Braid the strips by folding them over each other
Arrange the braid around the edges of the pastry and push down gently to seal
