By combining the expertise of three food, drink and restaurant maestros – Richard Corrigan, John Nugent and Tony Gibney – it’s no surprise that you’d end up with a restaurant that becomes an instant hit. Daffodil Mulligan, which the trio opened in Shoreditch in 2019, certainly took London by storm from day one.
Aiming to be a more casual dining destination than Corrigan’s other ventures, Daffodil Mulligan’s long dining room, large windows lined with banquettes and high ceilings wouldn’t look out of place at a traditional London boozer, although a ten-seat oyster bar adds a touch of class. Meanwhile, hiding below the dining room in the basement is raucous Irish bar Gibney’s, where live music and own-branded stout keeps visitors happy late into the night.
Given Corrigan’s prowess in the seafood department, it’s no surprise that it plays a large role on the food menu. Various oysters are available to start, as well as small plates including chorizo and mussel-stuffed squid, and beef tartare topped with oyster cream served in oyster shells. That’s not to say that it’s a meatless menu at Daffodil Mulligan – prime sirloin from Tipperary comes accompanied by beef tongue, while a side of smoked butter mash is garnished with bone marrow crumb. There’s undeniably an element of nostalgia from Corrigan when it comes to the playful desserts, including strawberries with Champagne jelly and ice cream.
A wide variety of wines available by both the glass and bottle is just the start of the drinks offering at Daffodil Mulligan. Inventive takes on classic cocktails (kiwi and jalapeno margaritas, for example), beers and stouts on draught and a short but sweet collection of Irish whiskeys ensure all tastes are catered for.
This collaboration with Gibney and Nugent has brought out Corrigan’s playful side, ensuring the chef’s boldly flavoured Irish cooking remains at the forefront.
The original Gibney’s pub which inspired the basement bar at Daffodil Mulligan first opened in County Dublin’s Malahide in 1937.
The restaurant is named after the daughter of legendary Irish street seller Biddy Mulligan.
Corrigan’s son acts as the restaurant’s general manager.
