Adjacent to Club Gascon, the Michelin-starred restaurant that made Pascal Aussignac’s name, is Le Bar (previously known as Cellar Gascon). It specialises in unique cocktails inspired by the flavours of southwest France, wines from Gascony and ‘frapas’ – tapas-sized sharing plates of classic French food. The décor combines effortless French elegance with industrial chic – the bare brick walls and copper-plated bar ensures the room appeals to those looking for both a light lunch in the day or a few drinks at night. Le Bar may be attached to Club Gascon, but it is a destination in its own right.
In an unhurried atmosphere, knowledgeable staff serve patrons well-considered cocktails and wines from southwestern France, expertly matched with the menu’s authentic Gascon fare – the bar remains staunchly faithful to the region's famous cuisine. Reasonably priced rustic snacks and tapas-sized sharing plates are enjoyed with a leisurely-drunk glass (or bottle) of wine in intimate surrounds. Pig and duck – the mainstays of Gascon cuisine – reign supreme: pâtés, rillettes and ham make for perfect bar snacks. Heartier options include Snails a la Bordelaise with crushed potatoes, the famous ‘Piggy Roll’ and a platter of ‘Piggy Treats’.
The express lunch remains great value, as does the plat du jour, which can be enjoyed for just £8.50 with an added starter for £3 and a glass of wine for £2.
