If a chef trains in the UK, there’s a good chance they’ll have studied the arts of classical French cookery. Stocks, sauces, braises, pastry – so many elements of this country’s food and drink have worked their way across Europe and influenced the way ingredients are prepared, cooked and served. And while the greatest thing about London’s dining scene is just how varied and multicultural it is, there’s still something special about classic French fare. Le Pont de La Tour has decades of experience in producing it to the highest standard.

Chef Tony Fleming joined the restaurant at the start of 2020 to ensure the menu remained true to Le Pont de La Tour’s roots but continued to appeal to a modern day audience. The trappings of a classical French restaurant are clear to see in the beautiful décor – plenty of white tablecloths, touches of gold and a relaxed, charming ambience make the dining room perfect for long lunches or dinners that stretch into the night. Being based right next to Tower Bridge and overlooking the Thames results in some beautiful views, and the terrace area allows for al fresco dining.

The à la carte menu offers a concise selection of starters, mains and desserts which all thurm with French flavour and technique. There’s also a separate section for crustaceans and caviar, plus aa menu du jour and children’s menu, ensuring everyone is catered for.

The wine list is, as you’d imagine, heavily French focused, but there are plenty more bottles on offer from both the Old and New World too. The bar is heavily stocked with a huge array of spirits, which can be enjoyed neat or mixed into a large selection of cocktails.

Le Pont de La Tour may be over thirty years old – a huge stretch of time for any restaurant – but it still remains as enjoyable and exciting as it did when it first opened. It’s a place to indulge in the original meaning of hospitality with friends and family in a beautiful part of the capital.

    Three things you should know

    2

Le Pont de La Tour was opened as part of Sir Terence Conran’s ‘Gastrodome’ during his regeneration of the Shad Thames area in 1991.

    3

There are plans to open a dedicated Crustacea Bar next to the terrace outside the restaurant for people seeking a truly special fruits de mer platter.
