Restaurant Magazine's annual countdown of the top 100 restaurants in the UK is here. We take a look at the full list and find out who took home the special awards this year.
With the official start of British summertime a matter of weeks away, we’re now in the depths of restaurant award season. Last week 50 Best grabbed the headlines with its updated list of the top restaurants across the whole world, but last night at the National Restaurant Awards the focus remained closer to home. Restaurant Magazine's annual countdown of the 100 best restaurants in the UK, as per usual, brought together some of the biggest names in British food, from chefs and restaurant owners to critics and bloggers, as they all waited to find out who would be named the best restaurant in the country.
Something that host Stefan Chomka was keen to highlight as he took to the stage of the awards' new Greenwich venue Magazine London, is the fact that the NRAs aim to take into account all aspects of the UK's dining scene, beyond simply the world of white table cloths. However, this year's list was still dominated by fine dining restaurants, with Brett Graham's The Ledbury, which was awarded its third star by the Michelin Guide earlier this year, topping the list for the first time. London's restaurants also accounted for a large proportion of the list, with seven of the top ten coming from the capital, and fifty-three of the top hundred.
Alongside the countdown, a number of special awards were also awarded including a Lifetime Achievement Award for Michel Roux Jr and the Chef to Watch award, which went to Akoko's Ayo Adeyemi. One of the biggest cheers of the night, meanwhile, was for Chishuru owner Adejoké Bakare, who took home the award for Chef of the Year. The Estrella Damm Sustainability Award went to The Bull Inn in Totnes, while husband-and-wife team Joshua and Vicky Overington were jointly named Restaurateurs of the Year for their Yorkshire restaurant Mysé. Tom Barnes' newly opened Manchester restaurant Skof wasn't eligible for the list but was recognised as this year's One to Watch.
